Collected Works of Aleister Crowley (3 Volumes). Boleskine, Foyers, Inverness: Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth S. 3 volumes in original black camel's hair wrappers. Upper cover of each volume lettered in white.

This copy with the ownership signature of NASA scientist Ralph Donaldson in each volume. Vol I: x + 270pp (errata faces page 264); Vol II: viii + (2) + 282pp; Vol III: viii + 248pp. Text printed on India Paper. This is the "Essay Competition" edition (stated facing each title page), and is most likely the true first issue of The Collected Works.

This edition was cheaply bound in order for it to be distributed quickly after printing to those interested in entering the competition, which was to determine who could write the best essay on Crowleys poetic works. The competition was won by J.

Fuller, who was most likely the only entrant. Fullers essay was later published in book form in 1907 as. The Star in the West.

The camel hair wrappers were notoriously fragile and copies, when found, are usually in extremely rough shape. This set is in remarkable condition with just some light edge wear from the oversized wrappers, and one pin hole to the upper left cover of volume I. Most pages remain unopened and therefore, an unread set. Condition on all 3 volumes are as close to fine as one is likely to encounter, and scarce thus. "The Collected Works" basically gathered together most of Crowley's work that had been published to date.

This was largely poetry and plays, but also included writings relating to mythology and his literary interests at the time. For obvious reasons, Crowley's more "obscene" works: "White Stains, " "Snowdrops from a Curate's Garden" etc. Works included are - Volume I: Aceldama, The Tale of Archais, Songs of The Spirit, The Poem, Jephthah, Mysteries, Jezebel and Other Tragic Poems, An Appeal to the American Republic - The Fatal Force - The Mothers Tragedy - The Temple of the Holy Ghost, Carmen Saeculare, Tannhauser, Appendix (Qabalistic Dogma).

Volume II: Oracles: The Autobiography of an Art, Alice: An Adultery, The Argonauts, Ahab and Other Poems, The God-Eater, The Sword of Song, Berashith: An Essay in Ontology, Science And Buddhism, The Excluded Middle: Or, The Sceptic Refuted - Time, Appendix. Volume III: The Star and the Garter, Why Jesus Wept, Rosa Mundi, and Other Love-Songs, The Sire De Maletroits Door, Gargoyles, Rodin in Rime, Orpheus, Epilogue and Dedication, and Appendices (Bibliographical Note and Index of First Lines).
