There are white specks or dots representing the ground around the base of the plants & trees. Two butterflies over clouds complete the slip decoration on the vase. The inside of the vase is white porclain and the bottom is celadon porcelain. The vase is unmarked as was common in antique Chinese celadon slip porcelain. The celadon bottom is characteristic of 18th century Chinese celadon vases according to the previous owner (who was also an appraiser of Asian arts).
The vase is unmaked but the previous owner believed it to be 18th century and rare. I cannot guarantee the age but the vase is certainly old and rare from my experience. Slip porcelain is made by using finely grained particles sorted from clay by soaking it in water. The fine grained clay results in a finer surface on the porcelain. This technique was one of the earliest in the development of Chinese ceramics and was particularly popular in the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279). Some pieces were in celadon and some in blue porcelain, both with white floral slip decorations. After this, I rarely found antique pieces of Chinese slip porcelain so I have treasured these. This is the only Chinese slip porcelain vase in this form that I have seen in 50+ years of active collecting. The celadon vase is in excellent antique condition with expected normal wear. The top of the vase appears darker in some photos but this is only a refection. The celadon color is consistent and uniform on the vase. There are common characteristics of old porcelain on the vase including tiny pits and dark spots. There is one shallow spot that appears to be a small chip from the manufacturing that it glazed over.
This is on the inside rim of the neck. There could be surface scratches and slight enamel loss. I could not find any chips, cracks, hairlines, repairs or damage to the vase.
Weight: 9 pounds 8.3 ounces. Width across at widest point: 9 1/2. Diameter of base: 5 3/8. This superb large antique Qing Chinese slip celadon porcelain bulbous vase is quite rare and in excellent condition. The slip vase would make a significant addition to a collection of fine Chinese arts and antiques. Please note: We make every effort to accurately describe all items offered for sale.
