Auctioning a beautiful museum, oil and tempera painting of a still life. Vase of varied flowers on tabletop. The painting appears to have a gallery stamp on verso, or it may be the name of the previous collector, it reads Salon., and has a collection reference number next to it. The painting is also baring signature "Renoir", in the lower right, which may point to the Impressionist artist. Gallery stamp, and reference number on verso. Renoir liked to paint bouquets of flowers while varying the arrangements, using them as exercises on shapes and colours. Here he took pleasure in mixing numerous species, the variety of which enabled him to achieve the desired arrangement. An interesting and unique find we acquired in an UK estate sale with two other similar works which will be auctioned during next weeks. Condition: as pictured, aging, no restoration required. Dimensions: 25.7 x 20.1 cm. The painting has a reference number marked on verso, which in our opinion belong to the previous collections this artwork was part of. In his still-lifes Renoir could concentrate purely on the colouristic and formal concerns. As he told Albert André,'I just let my brain rest when I paint flowers... The experience I gain in these works, I eventually apply to my (figure) pictures' quoted in W.
Gaunt, Renoir, Oxford, 1982, p. In a discussion with Renoir on his working practices, Henri Matisse recounted.Walking through the garden, I pick flower after flower and gather them one after another as they come in my arm. Then I go into the house with the intention of painting them. I arrange them according to my fancy - and what a disappointment: they have lost all of their magic in the arrangement. The unconscious arrangement made as I pick them, based upon the impulse of taste that leads me from one flower to the next, has been replaced by a willed arrangement.
This is influenced by memories of bouquets that have long since wilted but whose charm has stayed in my memory and guides me in putting together the new bouquet. Renoir said to me,'When I have arranged a bouquet in order to paint it, I look at it from every angle and remain standing at the side I hadn't thought of' quoted in G.
