George (signed Geo') Ayling was a British painter and illustrator. Perhaps best known for his marine landscapes of the English countryside, he often painted stylized depictions of sailboats over sparkling waterways. His delicate watercolors, built up in thin washes, uniquely captured the aquatic landscapes of England, often with ships and sailors busy at work within them. Notably, his illustrations were also used by the British Railways to create brightly colored lithographed advertising posters that promoted train travel throughout the United Kingdom: One such example advertised Dover as a seaside destination, depicting striped beach chairs and fashionable women carrying parasols. Born in Kennington, London in 1887, Ayling received his formal training from 1912 to 1914 at the Putney Art School in London, England.

Ayling exhibited at the Royal Academy, The Royal Institue Of Oil Painters, The Royal Institute Of Painters In Water Colours and at Thomas Agnews in London. Because of the fragile nature of picture frames, all frames are offered free with the painting. Jubilee Galleries specialise in Fine and Applied Art from the late 18th to the late 20th Century. Our particular interest lies in Mid Century modern art and design but appreciation is broad and therefore you may find anything from 1780's portraits to 1980's etchings. We also offer bank transfers for UK buyers.
