There are clouds at the top of the design with blue & brown mountains extending above the mist into the clouds. In a little valley towards the bottom of some mountains, there is a large pine tree and several plants near the base of mountains. Two lovely deer are in the valley watching a bird flying down.
On the opposite side of the jar, a majestic Chinese palace rises out of the clouds. The design of the cloisonne is very detailed with beautiful enamel colors of greens, white, blues, browns, pink, rose, yellow, lavender and black. There is an elaborate border at the top and the bottom that includes colorful Ming-style lotus. There is a dark metal finial on the lid that matches the base metal on jar (possibly brass).
The lid is finished in the Ming-style lotus with a pink border around the rim. This traditional pink enamel border is repeated at the bottom of the jar. The inside of the jar, lid and bottom are blue enamel. The jar is unmarked as was common with older cloisonne. I would date it to the late Qing or Republic era (1900 - 1949).
The design, workmanship and colors in the jar are wonderful & whimsical. I have never seen anything similar in 50+ years of collecting Chinese cloisonne so I believe the jar is quite rare. The lidded cloisonne jar is in excellent vintage condition with expected normal use.
There are some tiny areas of enamel loss on the jar. There could be surface scratches. The lid fits nicely on the jar. The finial is tight on the lid. The metal trim is somewhat tarnished which gives the jar an aged look. There are common characteristics of old cloisonné present such are tiny pit marks. There are no chips, cracks, repairs or damage that I can find.
The stand is a square lotus style with four feet. The stand is thick and substantial.
The stand is in excellent vintage condition with expected wear. There are surface scratches and a few rubs. I do not see any chips, cracks, missing pieces, repairs or damage to the stand. The stand is unmarked except for a paper label reading 5.This is one of my favorite Chinese wood stands and displays the lidded jar beautifully. Weight with lid: 5 pounds 2.55 ounces. Width across at the widest point: 7 1/2.
Height with lid: 16 3/4. Diameter of base: 4 3/4. Diameter of display area: 4 7/8. This rare old Chinese cloisonne lidded jar is a great find for the collector and anyone who loves Chinese art. The mountain scene is captivating and reflects the beauty of old China as shown in art.The vintage stand is highly collectible itself. A rare find for the collector.
