This is a very stylish Sterling Silver Vintage ladies Cross pendant, it has come from a private collection and its in wonderful original condition, I really like the pattern to the Turquoise colored Larimar cabochon stones & the contrast with the simple Silver mount which is very 1970's in style and taste. The pendant is a very classic mid-century design and looks like its by a good designer but I have no further details what so ever about who it was made, however the Larimar stone is so specific from what I can tell to the Island of the Dominican Republic that its probably possible to track down the maker if you collect this unusual stone jewelery?
I do not see Larimar much as a stone but it has an interesting history. In brief it was first discovered in the 1900's but at that time was not recognized or commercially mined however 2 men called Mendez & Rilling rediscovered the stone on a beach at the base of the Bahoruco Mountains in 1974, the stone at that time was thought to come from the sea and was locally called simply "Blue Gem Stone" however Mendez took his daughters name Larissa & the Spanish word for sea (Mar) & created the name "Larimar" to call it after his young daughter & the blue colours found in the Caribbean sea around the island. The stones at that point where only examples that had been washed down from the mountains above but they soon traced the source of the deposit & discovered the stone high in the mountains above at which point the famous "Los Chupaderos" mine was formed. Size: Approx 3.4 cm long for the pendant & about 2.6 cm across the turquoise and its broad fancy silver mount. The item "Vintage Sterling Silver & Original Rare Larimar Set Cross Pendant estate find" is in sale since Monday, May 11, 2020.
