WITH NEARLY 40 HAND COLORED MAPS/PLATES! Bound in a fine gilt-laden armorial binding, as shown with slight warping of the boards; the spine with two large ribs, a small bit of leather loss but maps bound firm and joints/hinges strong.

Small sticker at crown of spine. A few small stains, else in striking internal shape. Maps in great condition, all mounted well and the important World Map (map I), as well as others are hand-colored. This copy holds 39 maps/plates, lacking only the plate of America (map V), which would have made the total 40. Measures 4.5" x 3" closed.

First published by Lotter (Mattheus Seutter's son-in-law) and Lobeck in 1747 with an accompanying almanac, this rare, attractive, and detailed atlas was re-issued over the years, with maps reprinted and with new maps added, however the title-page continued to report 29 maps (as here). Also published as part of:Kurzgefasste Geographie. Augsburg, 1762 or before, this smaller, octagonal copy represents the second state of the separately published atlas; it differs by the presence of eight additional maps, all undated. The engraved title page issigned G.

[=Augustae Vindelicorum]; plates unnumbered; engraved plate headed "Index MapparumGeographicarum", provides numbers for the 29 original maps: I-XXIX. Fine double-hemisphere world map "Planisphaerium Globi Terrestris". Double-hemisphere celestial map "Hemisphaerium Boreali" [and] "Hemisphaeriusm Australe". Maps of each continent (the map of Asia shows the northernmost coastline of Australia).
