Alfred Ronalds brought order into fly-dressing with one of anglings FINEST BOOKS! This book, so ably written by the fly-tying entomologist, Ronalds, was an immediate success when first published in 1836. And was to remain so. Running into eleven editions, the last one being in 1921!
All editions are avidly sought by the angling book collector, and the earlier editions. (such as the FOURTH edition being offered here) are RARE!
One of the most appealing aspects of The Fly-Fishers Entomology is the superb HAND-COLORED COPPERPLATE illustrations showing the natural fly alongside the appropriate artificial! Few if any books can hold a candle to his outstanding illustrations!
Most of the groundwork that culminated in The Fly-Fishers Entomology was carried out on the rivers and streams of Staffordshire, where Ronalds lived. He was no idle observer of the ways of the trout and its feeding habits, and he went to considerable expense to build himself a substantial brick observatory set on the banks of the River Blyth, near Uttoxeter. From this vantage point he spent many hours observing at close range the natural fly-life of that stream, and the manner in which the trout reacted to the natural insects under varying conditions. All the flies described and illustrated in this book are typical of the wet flies of the period, excluding the three palmer dressings which Ronalds devised as being representative of three types of caterpillar.
With his Fly-Fisher's Entomology , originally published in 1836, Ronalds became the most significant figure after Cotton, whom he followed by a hundred and sixty years. It is safe to say that no single book ever had a more revolutionary effect on the angling worldthat is, the actual practice of angling, as opposed to the recording of its annalsthan The Fly-Fisher's Entomology.
Ronalds great innovation, providing HANDCOLORED ENGRAVINGS of both the artificial and natural flies, made the Entomology an invaluable instruction manual for the amateur. But more important than the drawings themselves, Ronalds did what hadn't been done before: he threw a bridge, so to speak, between the practice of angling and the science of entomology. Without abandoning vernacular names, he linked them for the first time with their technical or scientific names.
He gave fly fishing for the first time a systematic and scientific basis of distinguishing one fly from another (Gingrich, 112, 113). Ronalds brought order into fly-dressing by relating the anglers names for flies of the day to the recognized entomological system, and he gave to. One of the most beautiful books ever published for the angling hobbyist! Gilt Title on Front Cover.
