Up for sale here is fairly large group, 24 Twenty four, (only a few pictured all will be listed below) of Rare and Important antique Nautical Maps of the Great Lakes region of the United States. These engraved maps were made from original US Topographical Engineer Drawings from the late 1840s to about 1860 and engraved by listed artist / engraver William H. These maps were then tipped in "glued in by hand" to this very large folio.

The original drawings were created by George G. Some were done by J. Graham who also worked for the US Topographical Engineers in the 1840s and 1850s.

Many Maps are two large pages. Meade was also responsible for several other collectible , high value maps. Colorado by the end of 1862. The Bark Colorado started out as a Private owner vessel in 1856 and was commissioned in 1862 by the US Government.

The Colorado engaged in several Sea battles during the Civil war and sustained damage in battles as to where it had to be taken out of service a few times. The Colorado was commanded at one time by Lieutenant George Dewey who gained fame as Admiral Dewey during the US Spanish War. It is interesting to think that maybe Lieutenant Dewey was in his cabin at one time looking through these maps. Even the maps themselves are very difficult to come across on an individual basis, with maybe only a few appearing in the market place, but most in museums that we have found during our research of them. This folio is quite large not only in the amount of maps but also it is big in size, you need two arms to carry it.

The details of its contents can be found below. Maps included in the large folio sizes are for the total paper size not the engraving size and the list order does not match the pictures in the listing but you can enlarge the pictures to see some of their titles and details. As for condition there is light air burn along areas of all three exposed edges of the maps not covered by the spine of the book but not major and the paper is not brittle. There is some age discoloration typical with 150 year+ old paper. The leather spine is deteriorating and the pages are getting a little loose inside the spine but still intact.

There are several parts in the folio where there were probably additional maps but they were removed so we don't know who many would have been in the portfolio originally but the other map removals did not effect the condition of the remaining maps. There are some finger prints along some edges from turning the pages over the years but they are not very dark. The hard cover boards have scratches and wear but they did their job protecting the contents inside.

Many maps are two pages and there is a splice line on the spine holding them together, they are all intact and tight to the spine. Only a couple have very tiny tears on the edges.
