The middle-aged gentleman depicted in his cell is dressed and coiffed according to the fashion of the years 1803/05 see comparison image nr. We believe to deal with a portrait of one of the 1804 conspirators of the so-called "Pichegru-Cadoudal Conspiracy"; see our images nr. 7-8, awaiting trial and subsequent guillotine like his imprisoned accomplices as is well known, George Cadoudal was guillotined on June 25, 1804, along with eleven of his companions in the Place de la Grève in Paris see image nr. Like the victims of the French Revolution, who, before their execution, invited portrait miniaturists into their cells to have their portraits painted these "farewell" miniatures were then to be handed over (for a reward) by the prison guards to the relatives of those sentenced to execution (for example see our web # 43320 and # 41232), our depicted man also invited an as yet unknown Parisian artist into his cell.
