An extreme rarity at the current antique market, it is a work of Swiss, 18th-century portrait miniaturist de Carlé. De Carlé (sometimes he signed with nobiliary particle "de") was a captain of one of Swiss regiments of French Royal Army, whose family (and he himself, after retiring from the military) lived in Swiss town Freiburg (Fribourg). A few surviving works of this artist are dated between the years 1768 and 1782: among others, the "Album intime de Mr le Chevalier de Carlé, capitaine dans les regiments suisses a Paris en 1768" containing 27 drawn miniature portraits of his family and the two miniature female portraits that were offered for sale in Vienna in 1924 see our images nr.
