FINE Antique French Coach / Carriage Maker's Plow Router Plane, RARE

  
From my Coachmaker collection: Here we have a FINE Antique French Coach / Carriage Maker's Plow Router Plane. There are no maker marks on this plane. These RARE French plow planes were designed primarily for plowing (or routing) a groove on a curved surface which you have an abundance of on the fancy wooden coaches and carriages back in the late 1700's into the very early 1900's. The body is made of a dense hardwood. I'm not sure of the wood but it reminds me of a Fruitwood species. It has a thick iron fence wear plate and a thick and heavy iron plate that carries the 1/4 wide steel cutting iron and wedge. Both of these irons have'snecked' ends to allow for easy removal. The small skate has a curved surface.

These iron parts are fixed to the wood body with large 4 screws run through a brass support washer and through a fancy brass plate. The body has a round channel to carry the shavings away from the cutter. The plow body is approx.
