Fine, Rare & Early Antique BIG, HEAVY, nearly 5 lbs. , hand forged Vaquero spurs, with 11/16" (nearly 3/4" THICK) heel bands, with the outside heel bands hand filed with stippled (textured) panels, circa 1860's, with ORIGINAL spur leathers!

19th Century spurs with original leathers and are 100% original condition are extremely rare. This very early spur style has several characteristics that are only found on early spurs. These BIG, HEAVY spurs were designed for long rides on your horse, and would weigh down the legs and make a long ride more comfortable.

These 150 year old spurs were made for Vaquero gentleman, and are completely hand made by Master craftsmen using only basic hand tools such as hammers, files, chisels, and grind stones. These full-sized man's spurs are BIG, about 7 1/8" overall; with about a 3 3/16" heel band opening at the open end, +/- 1/16.

Both the inside and outside heel bands are 1 5/16" wide (tall) and 11/16" THICK! It is hard to imagine how a forger could hand forge this SUPER THICK heel band, and this quickly became a lost art form in spur craftsmanship. The outside heel bands have hand file worked vertical panels with tiny punch dot decoration background to create a textured pattern to the raised 3 dimensional panels.

The shanks are Large; about 11/16" wide across the top, and have a "triple eight shape, with the two holes nearest to the shank being countersunk. Being hand forged, the rowels vary slightly and are about 3 1/4 in diameter, taper slightly from the inside to the outside, with (6) tines on each spur rowel.

The rowels have a nice chiming sound when spun; a characteristic that advanced spur makers who knew how, used their talents to create this unique sound. Some Vaqueros were known to have a certain sound in their spurs when walking along a boardwalk, and could be identified just by the jingle/jangle of their spurs. The outside rowel pins are domed Iron. These fine spurs show very little wear from actual wear on the Western Frontier, and have a nice dark aged patina overall; especially for this early style spur that was passed down from generation to generation and typically saw decades and decades of hard use.

The BIG, HEAVY 1 3/8 diameter outside domed buttons are one solid piece of Iron. The smaller 13/16 diameter inside domed button are similar, en suite. All the buttons and swinger attachments are original to the spurs. Complete with the ORIGINAL Fancy unlined leather spur straps decorated with a very unusual blue center panel with double tooled borders and Iron buckles. I have only seen one other pair of this early original spur strap style; and they had a red center panel.

The remarkable straps are 100% complete, original, with no damage or repairs. These spurs are in excellent + condition with very light wear; especially considering they are nearly 150 years old.

All with a fine dark aged untouched patina overall that collectors love to see. These Investment grade early spurs are very rare; especially in this fine condition; and come from South of the Border, down Old Mexico way. These have been in my personal collection for 25 years, and came from the famous 60 year collection of the former George Taylor. These spurs would fit into any Spur, Espuela, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charita, Mexican, Mexican Revolution, Old West, Western, Wild West, South of the Border, or Western Americana display.
