FINE & RARE ANTIQUE MULTI-COLOR HAND MADE CHARMING EARLY 1800s. SMALL DOMED LOCKING WOODEN FOLK ART BOX FANCY WALLPAPER. INSIDE & OUTSIDE WITH KEY 200 YEARS OLD CIRCA EARLY 1800s. This is a hard-to-find Antique desk top size document box in the very desirous 7 3/4 long x 4 1/2 deep x 31/2 tall, from the early 1800s.

This small handmade wooden box has a base that is made from 5 pieces of wood, secured together, and covered with a multi-colored dark green wallpaper with red and beige marbled patterns. The inside is covered in an off-white wallpaper with dark blue dot and line patterns. The domed top is made from 5 wooden pieces, and covered in wallpaper inside and out, en suite. The front base panel has the original sheet iron or tin lock face that has an old key that works properly and locks the swinging hasp with a loop. The domed top has a sheet iron or tin fastener with a hinged hasp that fits inside the lock and is secured by a rotating cam inside using the antique key that works properly. The hasp has an end flared tab that is bent over the hinge pin and peened with a tiny rivet. The hasp locking loop is a piece of wire, flattened, and peened to a dome shape on the outside face of the hasp. Both the lock and the hasp attachment are secured to the box by 6 tiny hand made nails.

The domed top has a center brass ring that appears to be a brass wire; but the obverse side shows it is a piece of flat sheet brass that was folded over into a round ring shape. This ring is attached to a brass tab in the center of a 3-dimensional scalloped medallion decoration. The domed top and base are attached by a piece of linen that acts as a hinge and is intact with one tiny 1/4 tear at one end.

The glue used for the outside wallpaper has shrunken in a few places creating a naturally occurring random ridges and texture to the surface. As expected, there are a few areas of loss to the thin, delicate wallpaper; mostly to the rear top of the box, along the top side edges of the dome, and a small piece in the lower right back side corner. Certainly, none of these small issues distract from the overall presentation and charm of this rare piece. Overall, this rare and early 1800s decorator box is in remarkable condition overall and has been carefully cared for during its 200+ year history.
