FINE & RARE ROSE GOLD CARVED SMALL POCKET TOOTHPICK HOLDER ORIGINAL MIRROR c1790. ANTIQUE FINE & RARE ROSE GOLD CARVED SMALL POCKET. TOOTHPICK HOLDER OBJECT D` ART WITH ORIGINAL MIRROR. AND VELVET INTERIOR / COPING CIRCA 1790s.
This is a small & rare Antique pocket toothpick holder that dates to the late 1700's, circa 1790s. These small pocket containers would typically contain a small silver or gold toothpick, and sometimes a small spoon for removing ear wax. These small boxes were not only utilitarian object, but a necessary accoutrement for an affluent and fashionable Gentleman or Lady; and were considered an object d`art. They were typically made in fine materials, and most are similar in shape, but with different sizes, styles, and decorations. This piece is completely hand made, and both the top and bottom panels have 2 carved horizontal decorative ridges that were also added for a firm grasp for this small piece. The elongated octagonal rectangular shape is particularly esthetically pleasing, but difficult to make and create a tight-fitting seal. Thus, the bottom piece has a very thin protruding ridge on the inside rim that fits inside the top to create a tight fit. This piece is only about 3" long x 1/2" deep x 5/16 tall and weighs a mere. 4 ounces or 13 grams. Their rarity is due not only to surviving 2+ centuries; but their diminutive size lends itself to easily being lost. And if dropped or mishandled once, the mirror could shatter or the case could be damaged, and the value greatly diminished.
The interior has the orginal mirror and grey velvet lining, with the orginal braided thread coping intact. Note there is an original small niche to the top of the mirror that is typical and allows the front spring-loaded lip of the clasp to engage with a small carved hollowed out depression below the mirror to secure the top lip to the bottom.
All of these toothpick cases, unless made from precious metals and hallmarked, are unmarked; and most of these toothpick cases are hand crafted by Artisans and Craftsmen in Old England, and also France. This piece is in fine condition for its extreme 200+ years of age. The bottom has a small rose gold spring loaded protrusion lip that engages with a depression in the top lip, with a small gold press button in the front to disengage the lip open the top.
The case opens properly and closes tightly. The backside has a small rose gold 3-prong piano style hinge that is fitted to slots in both the top and bottom and aligns the top and bottom. The hinge and release button function perfectly. As is expected, all natural materials shrink slightly over 2+ centuries; and this piece has a thin hairline crack near the hinge on the back side of the bottom. There is a small round rose gold escutcheon inlaid into the top with a bow fiddle tool or parser that is intended for initials but is uninscribed. This would be a nice addition to any 18. Smalls, toothpick case, object d art, folk art or conversation piece collection or gift; and could still be used. Exceptions include holidays, power outages, and evacuations.
