This good quality miniature was executed in 1792 in Berlin by one of the artists living in this city - Isaak Jakob Clauce. The verso of the miniature retains a label with the name of the depicted woman: "Isabella Straker /married Wlm (for William) Tooke Robinson /1791". Possibly, this work was initially one of the (then common) two "wedding" portraits ordered by Mr. Robinson shortly after their marriage.
The Web provides the following information. The husband of Isabella - William Tooke Robinson, Esquire of Walthamstow (East London) - was born in 1770 and died in 1837, at the age of 67 (Portman Square, London). In 1836, he was still mentioned as one of this company's directors. Isabella and he had daughter Catherine (married Storey) and son William Tooke Robinson, junior (in 1835, he is mentioned as an "assistant" at the "Eastland Company", which was founded to foster trade with Scandinavian and Baltic Sea states). Isaak Jakob (Jacques) Clauce was born on October 25, 1728 in Berlin and died in the same city on August 23, 1811.
He was the son of goldsmith Louis Clauce (ca 1698 - 1773 Berlin), who moved to Berlin from Noiseville by Metz (France) and in 1726 married there the daughter of another French expatriate and fellow-goldsmith - Anne Suzanne Barbiez. Isaak Jakob began studying art in 1739 and trained with miniaturist Gustaf A. He continued working in the latter's studio until 1746.
In 1755, he married in Berlin Marianne Rosalie Giroux from Paris. Back in 1753, Clauce was mentioned as the best portrait and miniature artist working in Meissen.
In 1756, his name is included in the list of Dresden residents. In April of the same (1756) year, he was invited by the King of Prussia to return to Berlin. Soon thereafter, he received employment as an artist of Porcelain Manufactory of Wegely (Berlin). From 1761, he was working at the Porcelain Manufactory of Gotzkowsky (from 1763 - Royal Porcelain Manufactory "KPM") as the senior painter. Besides his activity as a porcelain painter, Isaak Jakob Clauce was also a popular portrait miniaturist.
