An extremely rare and very important enamel miniature by the well known 19th-century Swiss female artist - Mme Aimee Wagnon-Chantre. This work was examined by the world's best expert in portrait miniatures, Dr. Bodo Hofstetter (Switzerland - also see his publications), upon his visit to our gallery (June 12th 2007).
He recognized it as an original work of this artist. Mme Aimee Wagnon-Chantre (1818 Geneva - 1899 ibidem) was a pupil of Genevan enamel painter Jacques-Marc Henry, and was herself a well known enamel painter, who specialized in commissioned portraits and copies after old masters. Museum Rath in Geneva houses a wonderful copy painted by Wagnon-Chantre after Largilliere. In 1843 she married M.Gabriel Wagnon, and, from that point on, signed her works with a. Wagnon as in our case! The miniature is set in a hand-carved 19th-century frame in "Florentine" style with sitter's Coat of Arms in the upper part. Measurements: UNFRAMED:9,5x8,0cm/3,7x3,1in FRAMED: 14,9x13,0cm/5,9x5,1in. Creator Dates: 1818 Geneva-1899 Geneva.
