A super rare and truly fine genuine antique posy ring in solid 22 carat gold, dating from the late 1600's. It's unusually wide at 5.5 mm and is a fabulous slim D-shape with its softly rounded outer.
It has some breathtaking, inimitable centuries old patina that serves only to add to its authenticity. It has bags of that otherworldly feel peculiar to objects made in a different time, with magic and wonder in the hand. The tender dedication to the inner band is engraved by hand, and is invisible when worn. Posy rings became a popular choice for wedding rings during the mid-17th century, when the Puritan culture of Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth discouraged the wearing of ostentatious jewellery. My favourite aspect of this piece is the style of lettering used - it's clear yet with ornate flourishes that give character and place it in history, you can really imagine the engraver hard at work forming each line of each letter. The charming spelling helps date it to long before the printed word was widely available and spelling was standardized. It's a size 5.75 and though it could be resized a little, I don't recommend it as there will be loss to the patina.
It weighs 3.2 grams. What's more, I offer layaway deals so there's no need to let any of my listings slip through your fingers - just ask!
