RARE Original 1919 Art Nouveau 18K Tri-Color Gold Pendant, French Mark, Engraved
This amazing 18K solid gold pendant commemorates a special occasion. The back is inscribed with the date of June 22, 1919. The front has a monogram MG? The pendant was created at the end of the Art Nouveau period (1910 to1919), prior to the Art Deco era (1920-30s). There's very fine artistry in the various colors of 18K gold. Green, rose and yellow gold were used.
The green gold leaves (foliage), yellow gold flowers and a butterfly. The majority of the piece is done in rose (or pink) gold. SIZE - 1 1/8th" Long (with bail) by 3/4 " Wide. WEIGHT - 1.53 grams.
TESTING: This piece was acid tested and is positive for 18K purity. HALLMARKS - An eagle's head mark- the French mark for 18k purity - is located directly under the bail on the front. Zoom on last photo to see the mark. The metal was also tested and is positive for 18K purity. We did not find any makers marks.
The front has the initials "MG" (we think) engraved in a scrolled font. The back of the pendant shows a date in French - "22 Juin 1919". CONDITION - There is a ding on the pendant. The slight indentation in no way detracts from the beauty of this 102 year-old piece.
Our sense is that this was a First Holy Communion medal and at some point, someone bit the piece to see if it were real gold. Thank you for visiting our shop. We welcome questions and comments about the pendant and/or about our policies.
